I feel I’ve entered Bronte country and will find Wuthering Heights along the way. As I finally reach the top of the hill, there it stands, bold, proud and beautiful, Hilles House.

Sharon Martin, Editor, Cotswold Living Magazine

Hilles House is the exquisite Grade II* listed wedding venue on the Edge near Painswick and Stroud in glorious Gloucestershire, featuring extraordinary Arts & Crafts architecture. Within easy reach of the M4 and M40, the House provides a dramatic backdrop with magnificent panoramic views across five counties. We chat to Detmar Blow, owner and occupier of the historical and romantic Hilles House in the Cotswolds, for his ultimate guide on why you must book a wedding venue viewing: –

There is no other way to understand the unique atmosphere of a wedding venue without viewing. It is so important to consider. Location is everything. We only offer private viewings at Hilles House with our wedding planner Emma Taylor Roach or me. It is the only way to truly understand what an iconic place this is. As soon as you turn down the long driveway, feel the creative history, experience the relaxed and bohemian vibes, to view the extensive mature gardens and the most incredible views. The question you must ask is, does it work for me, for us, and for our family and friends?

We offer only private viewings because we want you to feel relaxed and to be able to ask any question – no question is a daft question. We welcome notetaking and photographs – so you have captured all and can make the right decision on the type of wedding and reception you want while ensuring all your guests are happy. And that is the ultimate accolade – to ensure you and your guests have had a wonderful, joyous day unique to you two.

However, to get to that point, there are several questions and answers to help you make the right decisions. Our weddings at Hilles House page on the website, we hope covers most points and include:

  • Can the bride get ready here?
Yes. The bride and bridesmaids can use the Primavera bedroom to change. This is upstairs, has beautiful natural light, perfect for those pre-wedding pictures, and has space for the bridal party to have a fun, relaxed, and endearing time to get ready. There is also quiet space for that moment the bride will need, as well as a wonderful staircase to begin your marriage journey!
  • Can I get married here?
Yes, we cater for 100 in the Big Hall and 150 outside with the panoramic views behind.
  • We want to get married in a Church; is there one nearby?
Yes, there are the stunning churches at Painswick, Pitchcombe, Cranham, or Stroud. The wedding party and the guests can return to Hilles House for the wedding reception.
  • What’s included in the cost?
Please visit our wedding page for the full list of what is included.
  • How much is corkage?
For many, surprisingly, we don’t charge corkage. This is your private home for the day/weekend and we want you to feel as relaxed as possible without worrying about how many drinks you have to pay for.
  • Can you recommend caterers/photographers/marquee hire/yurts?
Yes! Over the last few years, we have worked with some great local businesses, all of whom are excellent and have made it onto our trusted suppliers list.

When we meet you at the private viewing, we will discuss what you want and think you would like and recommend who to contact in the first instance who will match your requirements best and give you all the contacts and details you need. Remember, it’s your day, your time to celebrate; it has to be perfect. As you plan your wedding, always remember the following:

  • It’s your wedding and your day
  • Location is everything
  • Relationships are so important
